Portugal Football Team – Get the Latest About Euro Cup and World Cup

May 27th, 2010 by admin

The national football team of Portugal is member UEFA and it is organized by the Portuguese Football Federation. The team got its greatest performance in 1966 in England when they managed to qualify for the final tournament, in a semifinal, when they were defeated by England. We have to mention that England obtained the title that year. They were leaded by Eusebio, a legendary football player and they managed to defeat Brazil with nil to three and defeated North Chorea with 5 to 3. That year Portugal was the third football team in the world and Eusebio was considered the best player of the tournament.

Now, in 2008, the Turkish coach, Fatih Terim, has declared that he has been disappointed at the result obtained in the match with Portugal, in which his trainees have lost with a score of two to nil.

He said that at a moment, they were equal in the first half and the Portuguese had moments of weakness as well, but the first goal did change the match. Portugal is one of the best football teams in Europe and the result of this game has confirmed it.

In order to show their sympathy for the Portuguese team almost 12,000 fans have bought tickets to watch the training of this team in Neuchatel.

The entrance tickets cost almost 15 dollars and the training with audience was programmed on the stadium called La Maladiere in Neuchatel. Tickets were sold at a price four times higher than the official one. All in all these aspects show that Portugal is a popular team with great chances to be a top team this year as well.

Who Will Win the 2010 Football World Cup?

January 14th, 2010 by admin

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa should be a great event with a variety of potential winners. If you look at the contenders, you may come to the conclusion that Brazil and Spain will be hot favourites.

Brazil have one of the worlds best players in the amazing Kaka and other top players such as Robinho. As usual they sailed through qualification but they do have a very tough group with the Ivory coast and Portugal providing difficult opposition.

Spain have a wonderful team and have a good draw for their world cup group. With players such as Torres and stars from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Arsenal they are sure to be strong contenders to add to their Euro 2008 success.

England stormed through world cup qualifying and with players such as Gerrard, Rooney and Lampard there is no doubt that they do have some top quality in their starting line up. However, despite an easy group it is normally the case that England struggle when they get to quarter final stage and meet a quality team.

Suspect areas include no recognised top class goalkeeper and a reliance on Wayne Rooney as the only world class striker.

Germany doesn’t have any outstanding players but never write the Germans off as they always rise to the occasion when the crunch comes. But look out for their tough opening group and a potential next round clash with England that could prove tricky for the Germans.

Portugal has the outstanding Ronaldo but only qualified after a play off which highlights the lack of class in their squad despite being one of the most skillful teams.

Argentina has the world player of the year in Lionel Messi and a host of other top stars but Maradona doesn’t have a settled team and they can be considered outsiders. But can you really write off any team with the skills of Messi?

Italy is the defending world champions who always start slowly but their team is getting older and it would be a surprise if they reached the final again.

France was lucky to qualify against Ireland and with players such as Henry and Vierra past their best it would need a massive improvement in form for the French to be serious contenders. Also throw in a manager who is not respected by the players and it’s hard to see how the French can reach the final again.

Other outsiders could be the Ivory Coast with Drogba in attack and possibly Holland, who has some class players.

The History of the FIFA World Cup Football Trophy

January 13th, 2010 by admin

There are many trophies presented for various sporting endeavours today, however one of the most famous of these is the FIFA World Cup. Yet what many people do not realize is that the FIFA World Cup Trophy awarded today has only been in existence since 1974. Prior to this date those nations that were winners of this particular sporting event were presented with the Jules Rimet Trophy instead.

The main reason why a new FIFA trophy was introduced was in 1970 Brazil were awarded the Jules Rimet Trophy outright as they had won this competition three times. As they were presented with this trophy so the FIFA had to arrange for a new trophy to be made to replace it.

The new FIFA World Cup trophy was then presented to the winning Nation in 1974 and this was West Germany who at the time were captained by Franz Beckenbauer. The trophy that they were presented with was designed by Silvio Gazzaniga and produced by Bertoni Milano.

This trophy just like the Jules Rimet one before is very elaborate in design. On the body there are two figures shown holding up the Earth and on its based are engraved “FIFA World Cup” in out pouring letters. The actual trophy is made from 18 carat solid gold and weighs a total of 11lb and measures to a height of 14.4 inches. To ensure that the cup stands correctly the base which measures a width of 5.1 inches has been made from a strong carbonate mineral known as Malachite.

To be able to view the names of the winning nations on this particular trophy it needs to be turned upside down. This is because the names and dates when the trophy was won are engraved on plaques in English on the bottom of the base.

Today there are still enough plaques available to allow a further 9 nations to have their winning details placed on this trophy. It is only after the FIFA World Cup Competition in 2038 will a decision need to be made as to whether this particular trophy should be retired and replaced with a new one.

The biggest difference with this particular FIFA World Cup Trophy is that it is not one that can be won outright as Brazil did with the Jules Rimet Trophy. Today although the winning team are presented with this trophy on the day of their victory they don’t actually get to keep it and instead of provided with a replica.

The main reason for this is that following Italy winning the competition in 2006 after the FIFA World Cup Trophy had been restored it was damaged. A number of days after the trophy had been presented to Italy pictures appeared in newspapers showing a small piece of the Malachite base had broken off. The damage to the trophy was repaired but in order to prevent such a situation in the future the FIFA decided no longer to allow the winning nation to retain the trophy until the next tournament.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy replica that the winning nation now receive is the same size as the original. However, unlike the original these are not made from solid gold but rather they use gold plating instead.

Camping, Football, and the 2010 World Cup

March 11th, 2009 by admin

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be in Durban, South Africa in June. Already the city is buzzing with excitement as people prepare for the biggest event in football. Venues are being built or renovated, hotels are booking rooms and filling to capacity, and fans everywhere are looking forward to some of the best matches football has to offer.

Hotel rooms and accommodations are reaching sky-high prices with most rooms now in the 900 Euro range and climbing. Unless you’re willing to stay in some of the seedier parts of town, it’s not likely you’ll find an affordable stay in Durban during the World Cup.

Unless you decide to think outside the box and realize that the only thing that could make the greatest football in the world more exciting is camping with your friends at a place that, when you ad up the bonuses, is better than most hotels anyway.

How does ten minutes walk from the beach, three or four minutes from restaurants and local clubs, restrooms, meals, and a huge common room with a giant screen television sound?

That is what you can have for a fraction of the cost of a hotel stay during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Durban.

The campsites and facilities are located on two school campuses in the suburbs of Durban, but near enough to downtown to be only minutes from the stadium (with regular shuttle services available). These schools have plenty of campsite space, full facilities including swimming pools and an Ops Center, and more.

Most of our guests this year are finding that they can reserve their stay for the entire series of World Cup games at only a few days’ cost compared to many hotels in the area.

A couple of minutes from pubs and restaurants, ten minutes from the beach, shuttles every hour to the stadium and Fan Parks, three meals served daily, full facilities, and a big screen TV in a large hall so you can enjoy the games even if you didn’t get into the stadium.

This has got to be the best way to see the greatest event in football history. Make your trip to the FIFA World Cup the greatest of all time!

Legends of the Football World Cup

September 27th, 2008 by admin

When it comes to selecting three legends of the World Cup, one has to go back in time somewhat. Over recent World Cups, players of the stature of Beckenbauer of Germany, Cruyf of Holland, Zinedine Zidane of France, Ronaldino of Brazil and Franco Baresi of Italy are players who immediately stick out and who would, under normal circumstances be considered as true legends. However, if one was to go back even further, then there would be a host of players who would also be regarded as true legends, many of whom have set the standard for what really constitutes a legend or not. The following three players have been singled out as the three greatest players ever to grace the World Cup. It is always going to be a subjective area debate and there is no right or wrong answers but the insight in the chosen players in this article hopefully justify their claims as the greatest players to have ever played in Football’s number one tournament.

Pele

Pele is probably the best loved and most famous name ever to be associated with the the history of football. Pele began his World Cup romance with Brazil in 1958 as a 17 year old, making his World Cup debut against Russia and becoming the youngest ever player at that time to play in the Finals. He scored his first World Cup goal against Wales that year in the Quarter finals but went on to score twice in the final in Brazil’s 5-2 win over hosts, Sweden. It was Brazil’s first ever win in the World Cup.

By 1962 Pele was already established as a footballing superstar, and he arrived at the World Cup finals in Chile that year with the world holding its breath, fully expectant of a super show by the 21 year old. Sadly for Pele, Brazil and football fans he was injured in the second match and took no further part in the tournament. It made little difference to the outcome however as Brazil proved yet again that they were the best team in the world by winning for the second time.

Pele suffered a similar fate in the 1966 World Cup in England, being literally kicked out of the tournament by ruthless defending. So badly injured was he after two Group games that Pele and Brazil failed to qualify from their Group and they went home early, much to the disappointment of the huge English support for him and them.

Two disappointing world cups left Pele with probably only one last chance to make amends and he arrived at the 1970 Mexico World Cup as part of a hugely impressive Brazil team, who were later to be regarded and still are regarded as the greatest football team ever seen. During that winning year, Pele was the shiniest star of a team full of shining stars, playing some of the most inspired, advanced and entertaining football ever witnessed. Pele score four times during their six match winning spree, but his overall play without doubt, inspired his team mates to produce some of the greatest football ever seen. That said, Pele will be remembered from that year as much for two spectacular attempts on goal that have often been copied down the years. The first was his outrageous dummy on the Uruguayan goalkeeper in the semi final, where he sent the keeper the wrong way without touching the ball and the second was his quick thinking lob from his own half that just went over the bar with the Czech goalkeeper off his line and beaten.

Diego Maradona

Currently the coach of Argentina, Maradona was regarded as the best player in the world for most of the 80s, but his crowning moments were probably saved for the 1986 World Cup when his brilliance led Argentina to victory.

Always a handful with the ball at his feet, Maradona had a very low centre of gravity, which combined with small but powerful frame, speed and immaculate left foot he was able to run past world class defenders as if they were standing still and he did this on two unforgettable occasions during the 1986 World Cup.

The first came against England in the quarter finals when he scored a goal that is still regarded as the greatest ever world cup goal. He took possession of the ball in his own half, dribbled with lightening speed past five English defenders, including keeper, Peter Shilton, before scoring. The whole movement took just 11 touches; the goal effectively won Argentina the match.

In the semi final he proved that the goal against England was no fluke and did exactly the same against Belgium, thus putting his team into the final against West Germany which they won 3-2.

Maradona scored five times in the 1986 World Cup and made five and although he will often be remembered for the very controversial ‘Hand Of God’ goal also against England, his name as a world cup player is now immortalised.

Sir Bobby Charlton

Sir Bobby would not be everybody’s choice admittedly, but this man so long the hero of English football in the 60s was probably the biggest influence in England’s successful World Cup campaign of 1966. Whilst he had a reasonably quiet World Cup final, due to good reasons, Charlton was the man who stopped the Portugese nation in their tracks in the semi final with two goals that will live forever in the memory. His contribution in that match put England in the final and his contribution in the final in which he marked the mercurial Franz Beckenbauer out of the game, enabled England to win the World Cup for the only time in their history.

Four years later in the Quarter final in Mexico against Germany, Charlton yet again nullified the profound threat posed by Beckenbauer , keeping him out of the game enabling England to dominate and go into a 2-0 lead. It was only after Charlton’s substitution, that Germany managed to come back. Inspired of course by the now free running Beckenbauer. He scored once, made one allowing Germany to not only claw back the deficit but to go on and win the match in extra time 3-2.

Sadly Sir Bobby retired after that match from international football and his like has still yet to return but his performances at the highest level of professional sport justify his inclusion in the top three.

World Cup Football

May 2nd, 2008 by admin

The FIFA World Cup is very important in the world of international football, also known as soccer. The World Cup is contested by the men’s national football teams of FIFA member nations and is awarded every 4 years. There have been 17 tournaments held to date, but only 7 nations have won the World Cup Finals. The nation of Brazil holds the cup currently and have won the cup a total of 5 times making them the leading team. The next World Cup Finals will be held in Germany where Germany holds 3 titles.

In 1872 the first international football match was played between England and Scotland. In the beginning of the sport there were never medals awarded. It was called a demonstration sport and was played at the Olympics.

In 1909 the game was finally played for a trophy and was organized by Sir Thomas Lipton. That game is often referred to a the first World Cup. The title was won by West Auckland. They won again in 1911.

In 1914 FIFA recognized the tournament as “world football for amateurs”. This how things led to the first intercontinental football competition in 1924 at the summer Olympics. Uruguay won the tournament. In 1928 FIFA came up with their own international tournament.

Because football was not very popular in the united states it was not part of the program for the 1932 Olympics held in Los Angeles.

Betting on the Football World Cup – For Beginners

February 5th, 2008 by admin

Analysts expect that almost $1 billion will be bet on the 2010 Football World Cup during the tournament as football fans look to turn their knowledge of the beautiful game into profits in the Football World Cup betting markets. Despite the fortune that will be bet on World Cup odds, there are many more football fans who would like to bet on the tournament but feel intimidated by the prospect of using an online bookmaker and placing bets on the internet. In reality, football betting is very easy, and this simple guide to World Cup betting will show you how to get started:

1. What You Need

The first thing you need to place bets online is a reputable bookmaker. Online betting guides like Gambling-Guru.com provide in-depth reviews of top bookmakers, ensuring that you only deal with the best in the business. Look out for bookmakers located in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as these are regulated and have decades of experience in sports betting.

2. Opening an Account

Once you’ve found a quality online bookmaker, you’ll need to open an account. During the registration process you’ll be asked to provide personal details. You are not required to deposit funds while registering your account, however; some bookmakers will require you to register your credit card.

3. Depositing Funds

If you like the look and feel of your online bookmaker, you’ll want to go ahead and deposit funds into your account. The easiest way to do this is with a VISA credit card. While other credit cards also work, VISA cards are the easiest cards to use when withdrawing winnings from your account. Using a credit card will also ensure that you qualify for a free bet.

4. Free Bets

Free World Cup bets are offered to new account holders by virtually all online bookmakers. Once you have made your deposit you can earn your free bet by placing a bet. Keep in mind that the free bet you are awarded will match the value of your first bet. Once your first bet produces a result you will be awarded a free bet coupon to use on any market at any time.

5. Placing a Bet

Placing a World Cup bet is simple. Find football on the list of betting sports, select the World Cup from the sub-menu and then choose the market you would like to bet on. As a beginner it’s easiest to bet on the outcome of a match in the match betting markets.

To place a bet tick the result you expect the match to produce. Your ‘selection’ will then appear on a betting slip on your screen and you will be prompted to enter the amount you would like to bet and asked to confirm your bet.

If you’re confused about how World Cup odds work, ensure that your odds format setting is on ‘decimal’. Decimal odds are the simplest format to understand – just multiply your stake by the decimal odds to determine the total payout on a winning bet.

6. Bet Results

Your World Cup bets will be settled within minutes of a match producing a result. If your bet wins the winnings will be added to your balance. You can withdraw your funds at any time. Keep in mind that you will only be rewarded with a free bet once you have placed your first bet and the even you bet on has produced a result.
