Olympic Sports Betting

May 25th, 2010 by admin

Betting on the outcome of a sports event is a favorite pastime for many people. So when the Olympic Games are being played, you can be sure that there will be lots of betting taking place.

The bets here will not only be on individual teams for various sports but also on which country will ultimately finish with the maximum medals. Betting begins in earnest even before a single match has started.

Germany is currently listed as the favorite to pick up the most medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. The Germans are followed by the United States and Norway. Another site lists Norway as the favorite at 11/10, followed by Germany at 5/4 and the United States at 11/5. For those more interested in betting on individual events, ice hockey is a great favorite, with Canada tipped as the favorite to win the gold at 11/10.

Before laying your bets, doing your homework is important. A good approach is to look at teams that are well-rounded with a good goaltender, stout defensemen, good penalty killers and players with scoring ability.

In an Olympic tournament, the strength of the draw is important, and you must go through this properly before placing your odds. In hockey, you must also consider the difference in rules between the National Hockey League (NHL) and Olympic Hockey. Remember not to take anything for granted, as it could be an important factor when it comes to the medal rounds.

These tournament match-up bets are not about who will win head-to-head, but rather which team will finish in a higher position at the end of the tourney, so be clear about that, and use it in your overall strategy.

There are high risks involved in taking bets for the Winter Olympics and therefore wagers are limited to $300 with no parlays. The Olympics are an event that the bookies are not very familiar and comfortable with. Therefore many shy away from taking big bets on the Olympics.

Is There a Reason That American Football is Not an Olympic Sport?

November 27th, 2009 by admin

Has it ever surprised you that one of the greatest sports in one of the greatest nations is not shared with the rest of the world? You have to think that the Olympic committee has received at least some request to add football. This article is meant to point out some of the peculiar reasons that it might not qualify for any future Olympic Games. First, is that it is an American Sport.

Second, they would probably shut it down just like baseball and softball. Third, the shear volume of players has to be a small reason for the non-inclusion. Fourth, there is no international sporting organization set up for football

Football is an American Sport

One of the main reasons that football might not be considered is that it is primarily an American sport. American football is not the only sport to have origins on this nation. Many sports like baseball and basket ball have expanded there reach to other countries. However football has never really extended past our continent. A reason may be due to the fact that football is a relatively newer sport. Though the exact date is unknown, we guess that it was started in the late 1800′s. Much later than some of its sporting relatives: rugby or even soccer.

They would shut it down just like baseball and softball

Much to the disappointment of many American fans Baseball and Softball will not be a part of the 2012 London games. One of the reasons is that the United States has won it so many times that there really is no amount of competition that can come up against them. We could easily assume that if football was instated into the Olympics that it would be relativity impossible do dethrone our talent in the sport. Seeing as there is no point in competing against the likes of the New York Giants or the Patriots in shear atheism, one could denote that the same fate that has visited baseball and softball would surely come to pass on American football even after it was instated into the Olympics.

Shear number of players

If American football was instated it would require the largest amount of athletes per team coming in on average about 56 members per team. An average soccer team has anywhere from 25 to 30 members. Twice as many people would not be a big reason for non-inclusion in the summer games, but it does present some concerns about getting competition that is not from the United States to come and participate.

No international sporting organization

By far the biggest reason that American football has not joined the ranks for the Olympics is football is lacking an international sporting organization. One of the requirements of any sport prior to entering the Olympics is an international organization that is established to govern the sport all over the world.

Given the first reason, that football is an American sport, and that this sport has not caught on with other countries it is not likely to see any organization being formed in the near future. Thus furthering the distance that American football would have to journey to enter the games.

Conclusion

In the end, the question that we need to pose is, “Does football need the Olympics?” I would state that football is fine where it is. It has been estimated that 97 million people tuned in for the Giants vs. Patriots super bowl. Though likely to increase in these 2008 games, viewers for the 2004 games in Athens were estimated at 24 million.

American football is American. In the end would we want to share one of our greatest pastimes with the rest of the world? Many Americans enjoy the fact that we as a nation have a very independent spirit. Having our own sport simply magnifies that spirit. One thing is for sure, Olympics or no Olympics American football is here to stay.

Clemson Tigers – Olympic Gold Medalists Who Were Part of the Clemson Tigers

April 13th, 2009 by admin

Before becoming successful, we all have our little starts. For a person to get the managerial position in a bank, one might work as a teller for years. A school principal may start out as a simple teacher before running the school. The chief nurse of a hospital started out as a staff nurse in ward. These are examples of small beginnings. It is like learning to crawl before walking. This process is not limited in the world of business or for skilled workers. This is very much part of any professional athlete no matter what kind of sports they are in.

As you all know, every athlete dreams of winning a gold medal in the Olympics. Winning in the Olympics is not an achievement that every athlete would want only for one self rather it is also an opportunity to give glory to their country. However, people who compete in here are the best of the best. Before they reached to that level, they may have started out competing in college leagues until graduation. These experiences are part of the small beginnings of every gold medalist winner in the Olympics.

Many schools have produced the best athletes in the world. One of the best colleges teams are the Clemson Tigers. They are the small beginnings of some athletes that are internationally acclaimed for bagging gold for United States. Below are list of the athletes:

1. Kim Graham- she is a hall of famer for this university and she is the leader when it comes to 400 meters run. Kim was an Olympic gold medalist back in 1996 for the 4×400 m relay. She was one of the contributors to the 13 gold medals United States got and in turn ranked number one for the 1996 Summer Olympics.

2. Mike Milchin- This 6 feet, 3 inches tall person is a native of Tennessee. He spent 3 years playing as a Tiger and after which he was drafted to play for the minor league baseball. He also became a Major League Baseball and assigned to Salt Lake Buzz. After being waived, he signed up with the Orioles. In 1988, Team USA won the gold medal for baseball with him as part of the team.

3. Gigi Fernandez- A professional tennis player from Puerto Rico, who one two Olympic Gold medals in 1992 and 1996, for the doubles category. She had 17 championship wins (from Wimbledon, US, French and Australian Open) in the same. She was a popular tennis player for this University and played only for 1 season.

4.Mark McKoy- He played for hurdles in the 1992 Summer Olympics and became the gold medalist. He has been a participant of the Olympics ever since he dropped out of this University. Although this person is originally from Canada, he still brought glory to United States.

These are just some of the athletes who brought gold to our country and were a product of Clemson Tigers. Any athlete from this school should be so proud of the products of their school.

2012 Olympic Tickets

October 29th, 2008 by admin

London 2012 ticket sales may well change the way all tickets are sold in the UK. Whilst london 2012 tickets are going to be sold at a fair price, the measures that are put in place to control them may seem on the face of it good, but in reality bad. If they stamp out all ticket touts by making it illegal to transfer an olympic ticket to another person by say the use of photo id e.g. if you have to send a photo with your ticket application like glastonbury then you won’t be able to sell that ticket to anyone. So if you can’t make that date then tough you will lose your money.

Now to stamp out 2012 olympic ticket touts by using the photo id method you’d have to bring in a law to cover all events not just the 2012 olympics. As an example if the law is changed to cover all tickets picture this, if you’ve spent
